If I Were You

If I Were You…

Have you ever thought about what would happen if YOU were one of the characters in a book? Like, if suddenly you swapped places with a character in a story so that you and your personality were in their situation? What would you do? How would the story changed? (I mean seriously, I can’t be the only one who thinks about these things!)

I’ve decided to share some of my thoughts on what I think would happen if I were to switch place with certain characters in three well-known stories.

Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series

harry potter and the sorcerer's stoneIf I were Hermione Granger, Harry Potter would be dead right now. Seriously! I feel like I’m fairly smart, but I’m not that smart. I like to do well in school and learn, but I don’t let my life revolve around knowledge. I mean, let’s face it, I have been known to watch really crappy reality TV for hours just to relax. Would Hermione ever do that? I don’t think so.

So no, if I were Hermione Granger, I don’t think Harry Potter and his friends would have ever made it to book seven. Voldemort would be ruling the world and I’d likely be one of his evil minions because as much as I’d want to do the right thing, I’d care more about self-preservation.

Oh, and even though I’m currently dating a ginger, I don’t see Ron and I dating. Sorry Weasley. You’re not my type.

Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series

The Hunger Games, Suzanne CollinsWell, let’s see, just a second ago I was talking about how self-preservation is more important to me than anything else. Does that mean I would kick ass in The Hunger Games? I think not.

First, let’s just get this out there: I’m not athletic. I did sports growing up and I’m sure I could get myself in shape if needed but I’m generally just a lazy person. (I think it’s a side effect of liking to be on computers all day.)

Second, I like food. Even if I tried to just hide it out I would likely die due to the loud sounds that would be coming out of my stomach, signaling all my competitors to my location every five minutes. I mean, I would be shouting at every opportunity for sponsors to send me food. How do you think that’d work?

Third, it just seems like a lot of effort when you know President Snow is going to make your life miserable even after the games are over. I think part of me would be happy to get it over with.

But, just to clear it up, if I somehow did make it to the end and it was just Peeta and I left with some berries? I would probably do the same thing Katniss did. Not because I love Peeta, but because he can bake. And as I already said, I’d be hungry by that point.

Bella Swan from the Twilight series

Twilight, Stephenie Meyer, Twilight series, AppleFor giggles, let’s talk about the female heroine that we all look up to and adore: Bella Swan. (That was irony, in case you missed it. I know sometimes it’s hard to communicate such things over the internet.)

If I were Bella, well… I would probably do a lot of the same stupid stuff she did. Now wait, I know this is probably slightly shocking to some, but when I think back to how I was during my teenage years. Well, I was awkward and incredibly in love all the time. I could see myself falling for some pale, sparkly dude who sniffs me all the time because that’s just the type of girl I am. (Oh, please don’t ever quote that.)

But, I’m not sure about the vampire bit. I’m not sure if I were to fall in love with a vampire my first thought would be “BITE ME!” I mean, immortality is great and I think we have all dreamed at one point or another about living forever. It’s just a lot though. What if Edward and I break up? He lives FOREVER. I will never really be able to escape his presence. And then I’ll go through all eternity being jealous of whatever other bloodsucker he latches onto. Plus, the idea of drinking blood, whether human or animal, just doesn’t really appeal to me. So hm… I’m not sure about that.

Still, bring on the sparkly boys. ;)

Your Turn!

Have you ever wondered what would happen to a story if you were put in the place of one of the character’s? Have any thoughts on how the above stories would change if you were put in those character’s places?
